Our Lady of Sorrows

Below you will find the entire recordings of a complete course focused on painting an icon of Our Lady of Sorrows (also known as the Lamenting Virgin). This gives a good introduction to Ian's teaching style.

On the left you can see the completed icon which Ian paints in the video recordings. From drawing, through gilding, making egg tempera and painting the icon, every step is demonstrated and the questions from the students watching it live are also included.

below it you can see the original which is an Italo-Byzantine icon from the 13th century by Giunta Pisano, now in the church of Santa Maria degli Angeli in Assisi.

Originally broadcast during the first phase of the Coronavirus pandemic in March 2020 it formed the nucleus of those inspired to want to take things further and was the basis for Ian to explore how to broadcast good quality teaching and which laid the foundations for the Academy Course in Icon Painting.

Press the button below and you will have a copy of the original notes sent out with the course, useful if you wish to paint this yourself, together with a summary of the content of each video.
