An intensive, 10 session course,

 in egg tempera

Byzantine icon painting.

Recorded over two weeks, from January 16 -27 2023,  it explores the icons of St George, and demonstrates designing and painting a new icon based on the examples here, from both Byzantium and from the English monastic illuminator Matthew Paris.

Rather than simply copy an old master, we will try to get on the inside of the design, what the Tradition requires for this icon, and explore how we can adapt it for a new context, that of the liturgy of the Western Church.

It is a Byzantine icon, but in a new English style.

In this course I will explore how

• to draw and design a new icon, 

• look at how an animal is painted,  

• armour

• as well as the characteristics of one of the most loved saints.

These are recorded sessions of the course that was conducted in January 2023.
