Online Library

Good reference materials are key to good progress

Various ebooks and the Manual are available and new ones are added quite frequently. Some of these are from research sites and are added only for consultation. Please do not keep or distribute them.

If you have any ebooks or websites you think would be useful for other students, please send them to Ian for review and be considered for our Library.

Learning Support

Tutor Groups

One of the innovations of the Icon Academy is the formation of small tutor groups for ongoing support.

The idea is that they

  • meet regularly
  • are small, no more than five participants
  • focus on the needs of the particular group
  • go at their own pace
  • are focused on developing good painting skills

These groups really are invaluable, not least in helping people to form friendships and offering mutual support.

Sessions usually last for one hour and are via Zoom. Currently groups meet weekly, but this is decided mutually between the members.

If you would like to join a group please email Ian with your request, and he will discuss the options available.

"It's like a grain of mustard seed, which, when it is sown in the earth, though it is less than all the seeds that are on the earth, yet when it is sown, grows up, and becomes greater than all the herbs, and puts out great branches, so that the birds of the sky can lodge under its shadow" .[Mark 4:30–32]

The Academy is a place where people can gather, be nurtured and flourish, just like the birds in this parable.

This is one of the reasons I chose the name, Arbor Vitae, the Tree of Life, for my work and, in particular, the Icon Academy.

Tutor groups are more than simply learning exercises. They are a place to share insights, explore possibilities and encounter challenges. A place to grow!

As a tutor, Ian offers direct support to budding iconographers in two other ways:

One on One tutorials - these  can deepen your knowledge by focused teaching and exploration.

Email critiques - where you send photos of your work with questions, so you can receive insights from an experienced eye specific to your work.

One-on-One Tutorial Support

All students may request a one on one tutorial session. Email Ian to arrange a mutual time once you have purchased your credit (30 or 60mins)

Email Support

I offer the chance for an email critique of your work should you find that helpful. Simply purchase a credit and email a copy of your latest work and I will respond within a week with a detailed commentary.
